How-to Live Life Boldly – The Emperor (Mulan)

“The flower that blooms in adversity is the most rare and beautiful of all”

– The Emperor, Mulan

They say that if someone cannot perform a task well while under pressure, they are likely unable to perform it well under any circumstance. The top performers in modern life are often those who repeatedly overcome adversity, persisting even in times of true drought. Those who truly fail are the ones who see adversity and hide from it, remaining at a standstill indefinitely.

If you haven’t seen the Disney classic MulanI feel sorry for you. This movie, frankly, is my favorite Disney movie. You can feel how you like about that, but I’d say it contains one of the most compelling underdog stories ever portrayed on screen. I also have to note that the music is the shit — don’t even get me started on that.

Woops… I got started.

Amazingly nostalgic Donny Osmond Disney tunes aside, this film also has elements perfect for inspiring those who feel like a casualty of life. The emperor was on to something.

Facing off against idk, like, a million huns?

No problem.

Taming Eddie Murphy’s saucy soul in dragon form?

In fact, I think all of us could use a bit of Mulan’s strength in the face of adversity. By measuring herself not by the standards of the men around her, but rather by her own expectation of greatness, she was able to overcome obstacles and excel. Surpassing those who once tried to suppress her growth.mulan-gif

Unfortunately for those of us in the real world, it is far easier to tuck our pottery away, protecting ourselves from the harsh conditions that may prove vital in allowing us to fully bloom.

Though the sunlight may burn at first, do you not still feel some desire to conquer it?

    • I actually had a brain fart the other night and called in support from a friend of mine, Toni. She offered me this quote and a few others. Well if she wanted me to use those others, she certainly shouldn’t have mentioned Mulan. I’ve seen this movie SO many times. Glad you liked it!
