They say that if someone cannot perform a task well while under pressure, they are likely unable to perform it well under any circumstance. The top performers in modern life are often those who repeatedly overcome adversity, persisting even in times of true drought. Those who truly fail are the ones who see adversity and hide from it, remaining at a standstill indefinitely.
If you haven’t seen the Disney classic Mulan, I feel sorry for you. This movie, frankly, is my favorite Disney movie. You can feel how you like about that, but I’d say it contains one of the most compelling underdog stories ever portrayed on screen. I also have to note that the music is the shit — don’t even get me started on that.

Amazingly nostalgic Donny Osmond Disney tunes aside, this film also has elements perfect for inspiring those who feel like a casualty of life. The emperor was on to something.

In fact, I think all of us could use a bit of Mulan’s strength in the face of adversity. By measuring herself not by the standards of the men around her, but rather by her own expectation of greatness, she was able to overcome obstacles and excel. Surpassing those who once tried to suppress her growth.
Unfortunately for those of us in the real world, it is far easier to tuck our pottery away, protecting ourselves from the harsh conditions that may prove vital in allowing us to fully bloom.
Though the sunlight may burn at first, do you not still feel some desire to conquer it?
