How-to Find The Niche That Works For You

In any line of freelance work, it is important to find the niche that best suits you. Programmers choose the languages that they like best; just the same as writers should choose an area of expertise that stimulates them. Not only does this streamline the already tiring process of finding work, but it also keeps you satisfied by allowing you to do work that is more in line with your interests.

Even if you already have your own blog up and running, you might not have a precise niche. If you like cars, you may consider reaching out to clients in that industry. Maybe you have a disabled sibling and have taken a strong interest in special education. The same rules apply. You only need a subject and a plan of action to reach out to decision makers in that industry.

A niche doesn’t have to be an abstract thought either. Niches can encompass a certain demographic or category as well. With the recent surge of millennial entrepreneurialism, you might have grown an interest in producing content for the blogs of successful business-minded 20-somethings.

The niche you choose is entirely up to you, the key is taking a self-inventory and discovering what topics are the most compelling for you as a writer.

Are you thinking, “well, I really like geology but I hear that niche doesn’t pay well”? In most cases, maybe that niche really won’t pay well. But certainly, if you are worth your salt as a writer, you should be able to command a higher rate. The results you are able to secure for your client directly correlate with the amount you are paid.

Value for value.

If you are lucky enough to have fallen into a niche that generally pays better than most, great! But, if you are worried that your niche will never pay the bills, don’t. As you gain expertise and hone your talent as a writer, the money will come.

Finding Your Niche

Now for the not-so-easy part — sorting your mind and picking out the topics that are most stimulating to you. Start by looking at topics you have written about recently.

  • Did you like writing about this subject? If so why?
  • If not, why?

Asking yourself this question can help in gauging how far your current work is from the niche you would be most comfortable writing in.

If you have a blog it is also a good idea to think about the topic you enjoy writing about most on there. While personal stories about your trip to Starbucks may not develop work, the descriptive concepts like how you fixed your bike or how you cope with mental illness could easily develop into a paying niche.

Here is an exercise that I’ve found extremely helpful. Several big-time freelance writers have commended this method of carving out their preferred niche.

  1. Pick three topics you are fond of.
  2. Pick another three topics.
  3. Pick three services you could potentially offer (ghostwriting, blog management, white papers).
  4. Determine which of the first three topics intersect with the second set.
  5. Eliminate topics until you have one or two left.
  6. Match the remaining topic(s) with a service.

It’s that simple. It may take some trial and error to find what works best for you, but all you really need is a topic and service.
